But Baby it's cold outside

Sleet coming down in a steady drizzle. Gray sunless sky dark as dusk and twice as nasty. A light mist shivering on a steady wind. Black ice waiting like a wink behind a skeletons eye patch.

Yep, no doubt about it. Looks like I picked myself a great day to start my driving lessons!

Fuck it! There'll always be excuses and i'll always be tempted to coddle my nerves with promises of 'tomorrow' if I should put it off today. Besides if I can learn to drive in this shit, then it stands to reason that I should be able to handle most other road conditions fairly easy. *crosses fingers*

Heading out now. Wish me luck!

Luck.
Also, yes, it's like waking through fire. Once you've managed that sort of thing, nothing else is so alarming any more.

Er. Walking, that is. Although I imagine that waking through fire is also a fairly brain-changing experience.

this is actually the best way to learn to drive. Mymom's boyfriend took me out on wet gras to learn to drive. "Learn in bad conditions and good conditions will be a cakewalk," he told me.

I learned to drive later than most of my peers -- and didn't really get into long distance driving till after college. But my dad's words always encouraged me the most: "It can't be that hard -- look at some of the idiots that do it."

True enough, just look at some of the clods that drive their whole life without incident.

Best of luck!

If you hit ice, don't let off the accelerator. Keep it constant and you won't crash out. Natural instinct is to let off, but you will loose control of your car. With rain, it's ok to let off. Not with ice.

PS. Are you learning standard or automatic?

From Airplane (the movie):

Good luck! We're all counting on you.

Seriously, take some St. Johns Wort and a deep breath, and have confidence. You'll do fine. And, yes, once you've driven in the worst, the rest comes easy.
