Every other Sunday I stock up on my satanism-points and indulge in an afternoon of AD&D. This is the much ballyhooed 4th edition which allows even a first level dungeon crawler to wield a character of sufficent death dealing capabiliities as to inspire their own series of Frank Frazetta paintings (okay maybe Boris Vallejo... you don't get Frazetta until say 5th level). To me it plays at times like one of those Final Fantasy games only with dice and at other times like an informal improv class where students are encouraged to speak in a snarky hybrid of old English and Geekese. There are six of us in the party and a DM. We got Parker the Indie-Rock Warlord, Chuck the Tiefling Warlock, [profile] nightelectric as an Eladrin Cleric, Paul the halfling Rogue (who I've dubbed "The Murder Midget"), Teddy Bear who plays a Wizard (with the porntacular name of "Sylus One Eye"), Mister [profile] nightelectric on DM duty and finally yours truly as a Dragon Born Paladin.

So before I pack up my Players Handbook to head off for the game I thought I would give you a quick introduction to my bi-weekly alter ego.

Grom at first glance resembles a rather expensive looking CGI that is voiced by Michael "Worf" Dorn if Michael Dorn had a cold. To put a quick image in your head picture a one-headed King Ghidorah from the old Japanese Kaiju movies, shrunk down to a humble 6'2", stuffed in crimson scale armor and given a two-handed battle ax. He is a paladin of the Temple of Ioun (a god of knowledge via the Thoth/Hermes archetype) and takes his job very seriously. In my little back story the paladins of Ioun go by the very anime-sounding title of 'Battle Librarians' and as such are tasked with roaming the land gathering esoteric and arcane tomes for their temple. This is done because the Iounites (Iounese?) strive to not only enrich their own vast church-libraries but also to keep potentially world threatening spell books out of the wrong hands. Grom isn't the brightest of the Battle-Librarians (though he has a lot of skill points in the history skill) but he is delightfully earnest and brave to a fault (usually being the first character to trip encounters and traps). This is a lot of fun for me because essentially it allows me to play a brick-with-a-heart-of-gold (and scales to match).

Stat wise Grom rocks an 18 strength and charisma (which is a bitch to play because in real life I have a charisma of 8). He's got a decent Wisdom and Constitution enough to pump up a few saving rolls. He has a so-so Intelligence and Dex (you try being graceful when you're an anthropomorphic dragon in full armor). He has a once-an-encounter lightning breath weapon (electric-halatosis) and several 'powers' allowing him to both heal and kill at will. He has a shit ton of hit points and healing surges and... hey are you still reading this?

Okay, I think I've sufficently saturated your sunday reading with non-sensical rpging references for now. Time for a quick shower and a cigarette before I head on out.
