This morning (or afternoon to the gainfully employed) I stumbled out to discover Vee watching Big Love while Pepe and Polo laid on their bellies, swatting their paws at something trapped underneath the large wooden cabinet in the dining room table. Suspecting yet another dead mouse incident I grabbed the big flashlight, got down on my gut and joined them for a little recon of my own. A quick spotlight search quickly revealed a tiny bird trapped and hiding from the frequent claw swipes the two brothers were using to fish him (or her) out.

Enlisting Vee's aid, I wrangled up the two brothers from their ambush and locked them inside the bedroom (where they proceeded to claw at the door furiously in protest).

While I lifted the cabinet, Vee tried to capture the bird with a large salad bowl so we could then set the little guy back outside. Of course the bird wasn't cooperating and everytime I moved the cabinet it just followed it and remained in cover. Finally we were able to prod it out with a broom handle... where it decided to flitter around the house with short bursts of flight.

The bird (I'm no orinthologist but it was small enough to fit in a fist and had feathers the dark brown of withered tree bark) hid behind sculptures, within the chanelier, underneath the TV, ontop of a stack of books on modern art and then back under the cabinet again. All despite the window and door a foot away being conspicously left wide open. We finally got lucky, through the use of a blanket and the broom, to trick the bird into taking off through the porch window.

So ended my adventures with the natural kingdom.

At this point I fully expect to wake up tomorrow to discover a family of squirrels living in the refrigerator or a mountain goat standing on the dining room table defiantly eating comic books and challenging me to do something about it.

Pepe and Polo meanwhile, having long been allowed back into the living room, are in a snit with me. I have interfered with their hunt and for that act of treason have been placed on the Cat Shit List (which once you're on you can never get back off).

Alright, now on with my previously scheduled day.
