Amon Tobin @ the Tabernacle
Sep. 21st, 2012 12:51 amEnded up saying fuck the bug, guzzling down some Nyquil and manning up to hit the Amon Tobin show after all. Which turned out to be one of the better ideas I've had in a very long time. The show wasn't the usual DJ-in-a-box gig filled with recycled beats and nostalgic grooves I expected. Amon Tobin's ISAM rather is a two story cubist installation piece whose surfaces are animated to respond to the rhythm shifts of the DJ 'piloting' within the sculpture's center. The visuals are nothing short of mind-blowing, causing my lone regret to be that I didn't follow the Nyquil with an LSD chaser. The music itself was all new to me. Pure space opera epic, with Tobin laying down flawless the soundtrack to the best science fiction movie never made. This is what I thought concerts would be like in the 'future' when I was a kid, dreaming of living "the good life on the off world colonies."
