jack_babalonSomething went wrong at the CDC. Under the current administration certain cuts were to be made to the CDC's operating budget. One of the slashes in the budget dealt with cold war era biological warfare programs- including Project: Lazarus Commando, a failed "Ultra vaccine" that would render exposed infantry immune to the effects of various neurological & bacterial weaponry. The 50 odd year old cannisters were to be moved to a secure sight in Las Vegas for "immediate Elimination". In the process of loading these cannisters a quick slip of the hands of an overworked crew man released the gases contained into the air.
Within hours the ER rooms were flooded with symptoms of a strange flu like virus. Within the day reports of "Cannibal sleepwalkers" were sporadically popping up. Each victim of these "Sleepwalkers" created another "Cannibal". Martial Law was declared but with most of the National Guard on tour in Iraq, and budget cuts in the metro police department, panic quickly overcame the city. Widespread looting washed over most of downtown, by the third day a paniced officer fired into a mob of the "sleepwalkers" accidently igniting a nearby tanker. By the dawn of the fourth day the city of Atlanta was,for the second time in her history, engulfed in flames. Firefighters unable to quell the flames due to the growing cannibal herdes had no choice but to abandon their posts. From a beseiged CNN building the world watched the contagion spread on live TV. The virus' symptoms were beginning to be reported in the surronding states of Alabama,Florida and South Carolina. Within a week "zombie mobs" were running rampant across the eastern seaboard.
Some of us were ready. Some of us had seen the Romero movies and made our move. Deciding to hold out in one of the buildings spared by the unchecked inferno-the Masquerade night club on North Avenue, an old cottonmill with stone walls and thick metal doors, with a working kitchen and a collapsable stairway should the first floor become breached many formed a shelter within the venues walls. Able to resupply with dangerous raids on the nearby Ponce De Leon Kroger and able to arm ourselves from the adjacent City Hall East police Dept. We waited for the end of the world in the last great club in Atlanta. A long never ending club night with no hope of rescue from the outside world.
