So i've been playing around on the decks again for an upcoming gig at the end of June. Practicing really. Trying out some ideas. It's fun... electo-sitars and Persian drums. Tribal Fusion meets Massive Attack. Industrial Bollywood spiced with Delerium and Dead can Dance.

But sometimes I get an itch. See my favorite part of DJing the Secret Room (Dot Net) was spinning the first hour. That's when I got to play Deadbolt, DJ Shadow, Johnny Cash, the Gorillaz, the Clash, Patsy Cline and Man...or Astro-Man. By 11 o'clock it was Metropolis records greatest hits and hey that's what I was paid for but my heart was always in that opening set. So last Sunday I put the Nusfrat Ali Khan aside for a moment, poured myself a strong drink, lit up a Camel and made myself a fun little B side on that dying art known as the 'mix tape'.

So here's my set from an imaginary club night. One that let's me play rockabilly, ska, lounge, surf, protopunk, be-bop, trip-hop and whatever else comes to mind. I call it

Volume 1
Kid Koala - Fender Bender
Tom Waits - Top of the Hill
Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Fuck shit up
Grinderman - No Pussy Blues
The Billy Nayer Show - When Love Smiles (American Astronaut soundtrack)
Hank Williams the III - Smoke & Wine
Southern Culture on the Skids - Smiley yeah yeah yeah
Los Straightjackets - Twist Gorilla
Bob Mcfadden- The Mummy
Gert Wilden - I told you not to cry
Combustible Edison - Spy Vs Spy
Madness - You keep me hanging on
English Beat - Tears of a clown
The Specials - Monkey Man
Makers - Jerome Tree (from 'Estrus Cocktail Companion')
1,000 Strings - A disappointing Love Affair
Bridget Bardot - ?
Bees - Jackalhead (from Acid Lounge vol.1)
Nouvelle Vague - Killing Moon
Combustible Edison - Carnival of Souls
?- Bellmans Jig

Now no snickering all you real DJs.

The highest compliment a (C)DJ can ask for. Thank you:)

Well if I get my laptop up and running again i'll try to install some music mixing programs (if I can find myself a Science Pirate to help me) and i'll shoot you a copy your way at D*C.

I would sit in the room and hold up the waqll to that.
If i had enough to drink i would dance to it, but me siting in the room is more of a compliment.. trust me my dancing is not something that compliments anybody...just kidding actually im not bad just dont enjoy it much.

I really want to see how this gig goes before I start again. I had a really bad time my last night DJing the SR (not b/c of anyone working there that night ... it's a long story really), i've done a night for Oni & Snow since then but felt kinda ... rusty, like I was just missing the mark, if that makes sense.

Besides unlike a lot of the real DJs in town, my decks jury rigged into my home entertainment system. Which means I usually need a club with it's own system for me to work with. That usually keeps me from taking more assignments.

Still i've always wanted to DJ a burlesque show, seriously... so if you have anything low tech like a cassette player i'll try and send you an audition tape.

You know now that I think about i've never seen you dance. You're usually in the "Zen Room" lounging at Fourth, chilling with us chain smokers outside or (though not lately) behind the bar.

But thanks all the same man.

lol, they have CD decks at Spring4th whcih is where the June 2nd show is taking place. We're going to be open from 9pm-2am, there will be about an hour show from 10pm-11pm and one from midnight-1am. You wouldn't even have to spin that much.

*pout*

You're the only DJ I know that truly appreciates the genre that we do and will mix it up enough to make everyone happy. I love my goth DJs, but I need that mixed with swing, ska, and whatever else to keep such a diverse crowd together. If you're not comfortable I understand and I obviously can't make you, just know I'm going to pout about it for awhile.

Sheesh, I can't even comment correctly.

Re-post, since my first attempt saw me mistakenly reply to someone else instead of the actual post. Mea culpa.

Ahem.

I never saw you, I only heard of you.
Talkin' 'bout the big Monkey Man.

If you throw in Tom Jones' version of "Black Betty", I'm sold.
