Fools! This is only the beginning! Have you learned nothing from Professor Dyer and his ill-fated Miskatonic University expedition to... The Mountains of Madness!

Marine species suggest Antarctic "cradle of life"

"Carnivorous sponges, 585 new species of crustaceans and hundreds of new worms have been discovered in the dark waters around Antarctica, suggesting these depths may have been the source of much marine life, European researchers reported on Wednesday."

"Six feet end to end, three and five-tenths feet central diameter, tapering to one foot at each end. Like a barrel with five bulging ridges in place of staves. Lateral breakages, as of thinnish stalks, are at equator in middle of these ridges. In furrows between ridges are curious growths – combs or wings that fold up and spread out like fans. . . which gives almost seven-foot wing spread. Arrangement reminds one of certain monsters of primal myth, especially fabled Elder Things in [the] Necronomicon."

This is why I believe the Bush administration has authorized a thorough carpet bombing of the Antarctic...
"The...the the Anarctic has long been a terrorist breeding ground for extraterrestialized life... that and I just hate penquins... penquins scare me... with their marching and those little tuxedos... what kind of bird wears a tuxedo!"

I'm not sure what scares me more... giant crabs or carniverous sponges.

Have you ever read anything by Tim Powers? If not, I recommend his stuff heartily, particularly Declare.

No I have not, just Wikipedia'd him though and he sounds interesting. As you can no doubt gather I enjoy the play (in the deconstructionist sense of the term) between history (which at times I believe is nothing but 'fiction' by omission ... if that makes sense)and art.

I'll try and keep my eyes peeled for a copy of Declare, thanks for the heads up:)

"Six feet end to end, three and five-tenths feet central diameter..."

Five-tenths?!
Who measures in tenths of feet?
Five-tenths is a half, anyway.
