The Rejection Files:
Dec. 10th, 2012 05:20 pmJust got my first response to a batch of short pieces I sent out - and it's a rejection:
"Dear Mr. ______,
Thank you for sending us "_______". This one started exceptionally strong, but the exposition could have benefited from some judicious trimming. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite meet the needs of our podcast."
I'm going to assume by 'judicious trimming' they mean show it to an editor first. Which I will certainly do before I send it back out there into the wilds of the publishing world. But hey, at least they thought it started off 'exceptionally strong' and that helps a lot, as I thought maybe the weakness of the piece was either its beginning or its dialogue. So the good news is that this one rejection letter gave me a lot more feedback to work with than I got from showing it to a few of my friends whose collective input amounted to - "Yeah, I read it" or "I didn't have time to read it."
Alright, looking forward to writing something better! :)
