Okay, now I know if I say something on here like: "Suspected terrorists shouldn't be allowed to buy guns in the United States." What you'll hear is - "I'm in favor of disarming all American Citizens because that's the only way to stop bad people from doing bad things with guns." Which kind of nullifies any argument I or anyone can make if you equate a modicum of regulation with outright banning of firearm sales. If I say 'perhaps gun show loop holes should be reevaluated' you hear "Dismantle the 2nd Amendment" then I guess you win by default. Yep, I know, a gun's saved your life before - and probably on the same day you bought it too. Yep, in Switzerland almost every citizen is armed and the rate of gun violence is much lower than here in the United States, but that their government also maintains a data base of who owns those weapons should be ignored because a data base is bad and criminals would find another way to get guns and kill us (except, y'know, in that country you keep citing). But let me ask this then? Why, why, why in a country where every phone call, every email, every book I check out of the library or purchase I make on a credit card is monitored, tallied and filed away by my government, why is the idea of them doing so with a firearm the worst thing that could happen to my liberties? I have yet to read one 2nd amendment proponent say - "I'm all for my AK-47 and I oppose the Patriot Act vehemently. I love my hand gun and I want an end to indefinite detentions." I know only a well armed militia will stop my country from turning into a Christian version of a pre-9/11 Afghanistan (hey, what do you know, pretty big gun culture there too) - but I'm just curious when that's gonna happen.

Also - I guess if regulating something doesn't work we should abolish all drug laws in this country, all laws governing environmental protection, all laws requiring financial institutions to be honest about their assets and oh, I don't know, any set of rules we agree on collectively that people seem to break regardless. They're not working. Sorry. We keep saying people can't do things and they do them so laws don't work. So let's just dissolve the social contract and whoever is the baddest mother fucker gets to call the shots. Literally.
