Danger Diabolik!
Jun. 16th, 2005 01:43 pmYay! I got my 'Danger Diabolik' DVD finally.
I don't know if any of you ATLers remember Blast Off Video! in Little five points. I remember going down the little alley way off Euclid Ave. across the street from the Yacht Club and right behind Accapella Books (where Teaspace is now). You went in and were immediatley struck with a sense of claustrophobia. It was a small little cave, with every available inch of wall covered with empty VHS boxes. There was a counter by the door, where Sam manned his station, and across from him a few feet in was a large comfy chair with a TV set periously mounted directly above it. There were little dividers that seperated the categories. Along the wall between the door and Sam's counter, were all the recent additions. From there each wall got compartamentalized into sections. Hoko action. Anime. Music/concerts. Strange TV/ Foriegn/ Horror/ Esoteric and the back was dedicated to the 'blue' material. But it was all vintage porn. B&W martini swilling, goofball popping, bombshells with bra's shaped like missile silos and legs built to snap a bulls neck if it ever stuck it's snoot in too close to the goods. Sam was really cool to me. He'd pour me a drink from his stash, he'd float me rentals when I was broke, he even let one of my friends hide from the police in the store. One day I was in there lounging and carousing, sipping cheap whiskey, talking cinema weird with Mr.Sam, specifically I just saw Dario Argento's Suspiria, when he asked me if I liked Mario Bava's work. I had never heard of him, and with a glee in his eyes that would probably get him arrested if there were any children present, he ran to the wall and plucked down Danger Diabolik! off the wall. I looked at the cover of the latex covered ninja looking guy with a most lovely slice of eurotrash blonde on one arm and a machine gun in the other. I checked it out and fell immediately in love with this master of Mod Ninjitsu!
Well Blast Off is long gone now. I don't know what happened to Sam, I read something in the Creative Loafing about him a few years ago. Married. Suburbs. The store just did'nt make enough money. A true shame. But now, after years of searching, after the 'Body Movin' video put it back on the map, I have my very own little Ninja of Love!
I'm going on a road trip in just under 30 minutes. Just me and the Girl. Won't be back until late Monday night. So i'll be off the radar for a bit.
Until then
Ciao!
