VOXBOX(tm) Implants

The new fad in body modification here in Terminus is what is colloquially known as the VOXBOX(tm)implant. This simple surgical procedure replaces the larynx with a minature series of microphones that allow one to talk at up to a 75-100 decibels. Originally this was a military bio-implant and as such was designed to allow authority figures to dispel riots and provide a non-lethal weapon in close combat scenarios. When I ride the subway home from work I see the kids forming up 'Shout-Circles' on the train platforms. The 'Shout-Circle' is a audio combat ring where six or seven VoxBoxers will begin shouting & whoever can shout the loudest the longest wins! Shout-Circles are rough though. Most contestants drop out clutching at their skulls as the blood trickles out of their shattered ear drums. Some of these kids end up with bootleg implant tech and the VOXBOX gives out after 75 decibels and their left with voices that resemble static whispers and words that crackle with feedback. Some kids have the damn thing short circuit and are electrocuted from the inside, a black hole smoldering where the Adams Apple used to be. Nobody really cared much about it until white suburban kids started getting VOXBOXs of their own, trying to imitate the hip-hop fad of the moment. Already there are rumors of SCREAM RAVES where clubgoers rig up their VOXBOXes to connect with their laptops so they speak mp3 downloads as loud as they want. When a group of angry teenagers walked into the First Baptist Church of Hangmen County,Ga and began screaming out the lyrics to the latest "G-Unit" single until the stained glass windows shattered and it rained glass down on the parishoners. Only the presence of a few god-fearin' NRA members in the congregation were able to put a stop to the sonic rampage with a few rounds of Jesus Buckshot(tm)to their skulls: Everything is 'self-defense' in Hangmen County. Pretty soon the VOXBOX will be outlawed and they'll return to their strictly militaristic & law enforcement origins. But for now I can hear them screaming a few blocks away
"HOLLER LIKE YOU HEAR ME.... Hear Me... hear me...hear me...!"
