No doubt they'll soon get well; the shock and strain
Have caused their stammering, disconnected talk.
Of course they're 'longing to go out again,' —
These boys with old, scared faces, learning to walk.
They'll soon forget their haunted nights; their cowed
Subjection to the ghosts of friends who died,—
Their dreams that drip with murder; and they'll be proud
Of glorious war that shatter'd all their pride...
Men who went out to battle, grim and glad;
Children, with eyes that hate you, broken and mad.
Siegfried Sassoon-(1886-1967)
Craiglockhart. October, 1917.

*- I would like to thank Hugh Parker & Charles Mosca, my Grandfathers who served in World War Two. One army, one Navy- one Europe, one the Pacific.
One taught me courage with a smile, the other that strength is often very quiet.

on 2004-11-11 05:55 pm (UTC)happy veteran's day, sir.
You don't have to call me sir...
on 2004-11-11 07:49 pm (UTC)I think that's from "An officer and a gentleman", neither of which i've ever been accused of being.
Thank you Catwalk for the patriotic shout out.
Read Anita Baker's "Regeneration" sometime. It's about Siegfried Sassoon & Owen Wilson meeting in the hospital after Sassoon (or "Mad Jack" as he was known for his Suicide commando
assaults on enemey trenches) protested the War publicly.
Holler at ya later
