Spoiler Alert: Everybodys guilty except the Old Man and his hippy kid!

So I caught some glimpses of the news at my friends house on Sunday. What stuck out was some interviews with survivors of that terrible storm that struck Central Florida last week. There was this woman, standing in front of a mountain of trash that was once her home. The interviewer was asking her how she was coping.

"Oh, well it's a tragedy, but it is the Lords doing I suppose." she responded with this heartbreaking sincerity. Then there was another guy they interviewed with the same deal: House gone, job gone, truck totaled. Dude woke up to find out he was living in a country music song. He says: "It's just God's Will" he shrugs with a stoicism that would be the envy of the Spartans themselves.

There was something disturbingly familiar about their tone of voice, something terribly sad and obvious at the same time. That's when it hit me. These people all sounded exactly like the victims of spousal abuse. The need to make excuses for HIS violent behavior, the desperate denials, the 'I must have had it coming' mentality that is tragically one of the signs of an abused spouse.

"Oh I know Jehovah gets a little rough when HE's been drinking... but HE's a good provider and he works real hard. I should just try harder!"

"Well maybe if I just pray a little bit more then HE'LL stop slapping me around karmically!"

"God LOVES me, that's why he has to hurt me!"

"Jesus didn't give me a black eye... I um... fell down the stairs".

Man just once i'd like to see somebody interviewed who walks out of the wreckage of his home, downs half a liter of Jack Daniels and begins screaming up to the sky: "COME DOWN HERE AND FIGHT LIKE A MAN YOU FUCKING COWARD!!!"

Oh well... just a thought really.

I wrote a poem once using exactly the same analogy. Now I'll have to dig around and find it.

yeah, but aren't all books dangerous?
i mean, in the whole "a little knowledge
is a dangerous thing" vein?

people who believe everything they are told
have no imagination.
also, i am the queen of america.
it's true!
