Dragon*Con and the Zen of Kamandi!

"Foolish Kamandi! The Lion Men have no need for puny safety words!"
Ah it's Dragon*Con season here in Terminus, Ga. That special time of year when my friends list is lit up with posts about costumes, comics, room parties, hook-ups and various sexual fantasies involving the cast of Firefly. D*C seems to have the wonderful effect of turning a 72 hour Labor Day weekend into a kind of Southern-Fried version of the Eleusinian Mysteries... only more Geek than Greek in origin.
But as I was glancing through some old comic book covers on the web today (it was that or do some work I guess) I came across some old issues of the Jack Kirby classic Kamandi. Suddenly it occured to me that these covers acted as a kind of delightful allegory for the whole Con experience... even if only on a personal level.
Way to go NostraKirby!
I should quickly disclose that DC's Kamandi was one of my earliest comic book experiences, one that fills me with both nostalgia and inspiration to this day. Beyond being a visual tour de force from one the most innovative artists in the industry, it resonated heavily on my six-seven year old's imagination with it's theme of a post-apocalypic Earth ruled by anthropomorphic animals, being explored by "The Last Boy On Earth" (there's a bittersweet poetry conjured by that phrase, one that for me, sums up all those latch key kid afternoons alone with my comics and waiting for the Folks to come home from work).
Anyway before i'm fired or you get too bored let's have some fun with The King & I.

What do you get when you mix Furries & Pirates together? Well an unconscious blond for starters...

Who can forget the dreaded Goth-Riot of '05 when the Cruxshadows show got canceled?

Mmmm... worst room party evah!

"Bah you call that a mint condition Superman costume?": This week: Death Duel in the Dealers Room!

"When? When will the Klingons & Stormtroopers learn to live in peace?"
