A brief glimpse at five of the most influential super villains in my life with video clips to match. One cannot underestimate the profound effect each one of these men (and woman) have had on my ambitions, my career, my friendships, my art and yes... my love life.

1.

"Diabolik...Master Race Car Driver... Master Skin Diver... Master Lover... MASTER!!!"

America has a Bat-Man. England a James Bond. But only Italy can boast of a mod super thief who dresses as a latex fetish-ninja. Prone to making love on mounds of stolen cash, fucking with the authorities on a grand scale and taking out the euro-trash by any means neccessary. Diabolik has only one "super-power" and that power is to be the man every man wishes they were!

2.

Back in the day when the "Wu-Tang Clan" were still watching old Kung-Fu Theatre re-runs off a rabbit earred tv set, day dreaming and scheming somewhere up in the wilds of Shao-lin (Staten Island to the rest of us), there was Sho'Nuff... the Sho-gun of Harlem from the forgotten 80's classic "The Last Dragon"

3.

"The Lord Humongous... the warrior of the waste land... the ayatollah of rock n'rolla!"

4.

Montgomery Burns once asked: "Just what is a Skeletor?" and it's taken me many years for me to find an adequate answer to just that question: A "Skeletor" is the steroid-goth, love child of Glenn Danzig and the Lord Humongous.

Would you want to fuck with someone like that... even if you had the Power of Greyskull?

5.

There can be no doubt about it. Destro & The Baroness were the original Kink-Scene Swing Couple. These two nasty ass freaks weren't just content with terrorism and world conquest. No sir. He was a swarthy arms dealer who wore an iron mask, an unbottoned shirt with a fur collar attached to it and a pair of bracelets that fired rockets (think of him as the Studio 54 version of Doctor Doom). She was the original Suicide Girl: A bored Eastern European Aristocrat who talked like "Natasha" off "Rocky & Bullwinkle" and was one of the worlds most deadliest assassins.

It was never revealed on any of the episodes of the cartoon but you just knew these two were up to "Marquis De Sade" shit up in Cobra HQ.

Now you know.

And knowing is half the battle!

I always loved "Danger Diabolik."

Started reading "The Filth" last night -- my first venture into Grant Morrison territory. Wow.

I was trying to explain to a friend what I meant by the phrase: "The sex lives of supervillains". Diabolik is exactly what I meant.

"Filth" is quite a doozy to start w/Mr.Morrison's bibliography off with. He once described 'The Filth' as a 'psychic innoculation shot' for all the horrible things crawling out of the post millenial collective subconscious.

You might want to give [livejournal.com profile] maestrosatori a ring and see if he can lend you his Invisibles Trades. Also his run on the Doom Patrol comes highly recommended:)

That quote seems to sum up a lot of the vibe behind "The Filth" quite succinctly, at least from the first 4 or 5 parts I've read.

I'd been interested in giving Morrison a go for a spell and, the other night, overheated, alone and partially intoxicated in the new house, I decided to check the folder of digital comics a friend had hooked me up with a year or so ago and see what Morrision was available -- No doom patrol or invisibles, but some Animal Man, some 20,000 AD stuff, a couple of other series that didn't ring a bell with me and The Filth.

It had me intrigued with the first panel. I'm not big on reading comics off a computer screen (which is why I've barely touched most of the stuff on the old hard drive) and probably would have rushed out and bought a copy of it by now if finances weren't so crazy getting the house and everything in gear.
