Well it's the first day of the Con and I thought for those of you who, like me, are trapped at their day jobs for the next few hours before they can fly madly into a three day free for all weekend, might get a kick out of seeing a popular parallel universe version of our beloved Fanboy Mardi Gras.
As some of you may know by now i'm a dabbler in the field of Mad Science. Nothing major, i've tinkered with occasional Tesla Cannon and Cardboard Robot. You could say "I know enough to get in trouble" as the saying goes. Well thanks to The E-Bay I was able to score a vintage Doc Insomniac Morpheoscope, a vintage piece of preatomic mad science that is powered by electricity, two dozen glass Ouija Boards and lots of lots of steam to produce a televised image of events occuring in over 22 different parallel universes.
I also scored a killer Gil Gerard era Buck Rogers Lunchbox for like ... $20!
Anyway these are a few chronosnapshots of the Dragon*Con of Earth-2 in the year 1943, taken by the Morpheoscope's detachable TachyonCamera. As you will see the similarties are almost chilling!

A few friends getting ready for the ShadowCrux show held in the Herst-Hyatt Hotel. Here we see that in this parallel universe Industrial Music began roughly 60 to 70 years earlier than it did on our earth. On Earth 2 the first Rivet-Heads were actually young German Dadaists and Steam Punks who had found themselves in the trenches of World War One's Western Front.
Inspired by "the rhythms of the machine, the march and of the 210mm Howitzer" they created a percussion based music (using helmets and empty ammo boxes for improvised drums) and inspired the works of Wagner. Iitially used as a morale booster and even occasionally a weapon of psychological warfare for thos. The French in turn responed with their own version of what was coming to be called 'Industrial Music' (a term coined by the Tommy's serving in the B.E.F.), that incorporated the indigenous rhythms of the Berber tribesmen serving in the French Zouave Regiments.
Though at the time of war the music was just one more horror to be faced in the trenches (described by the contemporary poet Seigfried Sasson as a "monstrous clash of both Throbbing Gristle and Crash Worship"), it was amazing that this music became quite popular in the western world after the war. From the cafes of Zurich, to the Cabaret Voltaires spreading in influence to the occult order of the Golden Dawn in England and even created quite a stir back in the states, where Industrial Music was quickly incorporated into the emerging sound of Swing (most popular was 'Trent Renzor and his Nine Inch Nail Orchestra').
In the 1940's the new Edison Electro-Raves have become more popular with kids but there is still a thriving 'Industrial Scene' to be found throughout the world and at D*C '43 especially.

As you can see the room party remains a staple of the Dragon*Con experience across the multiverse...

...as are elaborate fan costumes. Here we see one fans rendition of Optimus Prime from the popular Transrobobot serials.

Though the big theme this year is of course is Pirates, especially after Errol Flynn's stellar performance as Captain Jack Sparrow in the popular PotC serials. This year the SecretGallery will hold it's second annual Pirate Booty Contest with a popular selection of PhonoJockeys and Burlesque Cabarets!

on 2007-08-31 04:16 pm (UTC)Man, the rooms at the Hyatt were much more plush in the back when days!
So, Mr. Writer-Man, any Aura Blue info??? or am I completely on my own??? We need your stories!!!
xxx
Why thank you ma'am
on 2007-08-31 04:55 pm (UTC)I really hope you make it. You make the dreariest events bearable and the best events even more memorable!
Yes they were back then (and being a parallel universe... over there). Each room came with a hookah, a patented Tesla Wireless Intergram connection and a bottle of absinthe in each well packed bar.
The ladies pillow fighting in the picture above are members of the Will o'Whips an Atlanta based secret society of fetish inclined youths who have a fond interest in spiritualism, tantra and opiates of any mass;) Often decked out in their vinyl & rubber zootsuits and getting ready to engage in something they call seance play!(An idea I might actually explore later... or not)
No ideas yet, sorry but i'm glad at least one person needs my stories so thank you for that:)

on 2007-08-31 06:15 pm (UTC)Sunday is a go because
I REALLY wanna go to the D*C of 1943... Do you think Dr. Tesla ever made a personal appearance? He died around that time, I believe, so he would've been old, right? Or maybe not in the alternate universe?
Will Savannah still be around late on Sunday?

"Doctor Audry Tum was experimenting with an extradiemensional doorway field generator for M.I.T. Little did she know that her project had been sabotaged by a rival at the school. When Doctor Tum activated the Extradiemensional doorway during a test run ... it exploded in front of her, not killing her instantly but bathing her in waves of extradiemensional psychoenergy that emitted a blue glow around her... she soon discovered that her body was now a doorway to other diemensions, giving her control over electrical currents and allowing her to teleport great distances in the blink of an eye. Now Doctor Audry Tum has a new identity... THE BLUE AURA!!!!!'
See it's easy!
Nahhh Tesla wouldn't have shown up... that'd be like Stephen Hawking or Steve Jobs showing up at D*C this year... possible but not likely. Yeah i'd like to go to the D*C of '43 as well though. So that makes two of us so far... whoo-hoo!
Right on, I'll give Kitten an extra hug for you (provided she doesn't mace me for trying;))
Savannah most likely won't be there on Sunday sad to say. We're doing Saturday so the Witchgirl can see the parade!
Re: Why thank you ma'am
on 2007-08-31 07:15 pm (UTC)I don't think
