One last post and i'll shut up about it...
Oct. 9th, 2007 04:58 pmThe best part of the Zombie March was riding the Gauntlet of the Dead!
The march of the living dead had reached the MLK station and a steady trickling of 'zombies' were making their way up Grant Street through the underpass of the railroad bridge in route to Oakland Memorial Cemetery. I was on my bike. I found it easier to keep up with the crowd that way. I was taking a few shots of the stragglers just reaching MLK Station when I decided to take off down Grant and catch them as they came up the hill before they turned on MLK Drive.
Suddenly a few of the stragglers surround me. They're in green rags and if I was to guess i'd say they were the zombies from the old Billy Idol video from Dancing with Myself. I make a pistol with my left hand. Pull the invisible chamber back and 'fire' with several "P'Choo-P'Choo"'s hissed through my lips.
They go stumbling back enough to clear a hole.
I mount my Baby and take off up Grant at a steady glide.
I'm having a bit of a laugh over the whole shoot my way free scene, when just then, as i'm passing the procession climbing up Grant, a bunch of the 'zombies' step out of the line, off the sidewalk and come slow motion swarming at me through the street with grunted demands for my "Braaaains"! Without a second thought I pump the pedals hard, building up a steady velocity despite the gravity of the hill working against me. I'm passing by the procession with the quickness but now there's a chain reaction and a whole shitload of them come swarming at me. I zig zag around a cluster of shufflers, I duck under a series of grasping hands (feeling their fingers glide off the top of my head and the shoulder of my shirt), I zip around a few more who try stepping in front of me and don't let up with the speed!
The whole time my thoughts are just this elated mantra of "I can do this... I can do this... I can do this...." as I snake through the reaching clutches of my undead pursuers.
I hit the top of the hill with a screech of my brakes. I'm panting and laughing at the same time. The adrenalin rush is pounding endorphins straight into the brain. I look down at the trail of approaching 'zombies'. They're attacking a MARTA bus rumbling slowly down the hill. Geek tourists and commuters stare through the window at the Ghoul Parade making mock threats with light slaps across the bus windows and door. I got a good half block lead on them easy.
I dismount, pull out my camera and steady my aim.
But the whole time I can's stop smiling, laughing really. See deep down inside i've been practicing (secretly wishing) for a moment like this ever since I was a kid... and I did it! I felt vindicated and alive. I felt the thrill of victory that comes not from a playing field... but rather the playground.
The Swarm comes closer, the sun beats down on me, the digital lense focuses in on the lead...
...I take my time, aim carefully and shoot for the head!
