My shadow glides in silence
over the watercourse.

On account of my shadow
the frogs are deprived of stars.

The shadow sends my body
reflections of quiet things.

My shadow moves like a huge
violet-colored mosquito.

A hundred crickets are trying
to gild the glow of the reeds.

A glow arises in my breast,
the one mirrored in the water.

i love lorca. my favorite poem is 'Romance Sonámbulo,' which is haunting. i only wish i knew spanish well enough to appreciate it fully. the opening stanza is so moving:

Verde que te quiero verde,
verde viento. Verdes ramas.
El barco sobre el mar
y el caballo en la montaña.
Con la sombra en la cintura
ella sueña en su baranda,
verde carne, pelo verde,
con ojos de fría plata.
Verde que te quiero verde.
Bajo la luna gitana,
las cosas la están mirando
y ella no puede mirarlas.

[Green, how I want you green.
Green wind. Green branches.
The ship out on the sea
and the horse on the mountain.
With the shade around her waist
she dreams on her balcony,
green flesh, her hair green,
with eyes of cold silver.
Green, how I want you green.
Under the gypsy moon,
all things are watching her
and she cannot see them.]

Mmmm... there is a wonderful sensuality about the mans works, that though capable of conjuring the most sublime (and erotic) imagery it never drifts into the realm of the flowery or maudlin. My two favorites is the "Unfaithful Wife" and the "Lament for Ignacio Sanchez Mejias" (which seems reminescent of TS Eliot a bit... but maybe that's just me).

Mainly though, he makes it look so easy when you read his works, I just kinda sit there going "why can't I write like this?"
