It's a little of both. I usually have a rough idea of the area i'm exploring but often stumble across a find along the way or see something of interest by accident, however I do have the camera so the intention is never far off.
I used to carry my camera around with my where ever I went. Some where along the line I lost both gumption and inspiration. Not that I have ever took pictures of the artistic level that you do, but I should really resume the practice.
