Walking home from the video store through Little Five. The last hours of the weekend finds the Square and the Plaza and the bars practically deserted. Yet in front of the liquor store on Moreland Avenue, a lone man is playing the Human League's Don't You Want Me? on a wooden flute. Bearded and hoodied up he really puts some effort into the solo at my approach. I toss him some spare change into an empty baseball hat. He nods a 'thank you' and switches to Shoot that Poison Arrow by ABC. Without looking back I whistle along. On the railroad tracks before I turn off, a plump milk and orange moon peeks over the box cars to see if it's safe to come out.

Thanks... I guess the guy played what he knew... or that matter maybe he was playing something else and I 'heard' what I wanted to hear.
