Though I've lived here in Terminus close to two decades now, I have seen precious little of neighboring Decatur. This Sunday last I decided to remedy that fact and went out exploring with my trusty second hand camera. It was a sumptously crisp afternoon with a casual stroll down Clairmont Road yielding dogwoods blooming magnificently all around and majestic batches of wysteria draped gingerly along the sun dappled trees. Kids played in lush lawns, old men nodded with good cheer at my passing and couples drifted hand-in-hand with eyes only for each other.

When I reached the end of Clairmont, right on the intersection of East Peachtree and directly across the street from the Dekalb County Courthouse, I glanced up to find myself here -

G-thing at the Pythagoras Temple

- Now what I found really cool, was that across the street and on the opposite corner of the temple sat a statue of Thomas Jefferson. The statue is tres casual, with Big Tom sitting on a bench, looking up ponderously as he wrote with quill the future of our 'Great Experiment'. The statue is located right outside the Courthouse and is the only statue of a founding father present. I had to wait a few minutes while beer-bellied and fannypack strapped tourists took turns posing with the Big man - some giving him rabbit ears and others draping arms around him as if they were old friends who met at the bar.

The Noble Statesman

Once the tourists ambled off to go play on the antique cannon mounted outside the courthouse's steps, I made my way over, snapped a few shots off and quickly realized that if you stood directly behind Jefferson's shoulder you could plainly see that his stare was fixated on the Pythagoras Temple. As so -

Jefferson watching the Pythagoras Temple

Being an esoterica geek of the thirty-third degree, I couldn't help but laugh (out loud no less) at this juxtaposition of public art and freemasonic shout-out. A few locals and tourists scrunched up their faces at me in disapproval, no doubt finding the image of me resting my unkempt goatee on Thomas Jefferson's shoulder while snickering to be an unsightly scene indeed.

It was apparent that none of them got the 'joke'.

Recently my best friend has gotten in touch with one of his 'brothers' and my dad and I have been vouchsafed a tour of the Temple sometime soon. Though I doubt photos will be allowed, I can't wait to take a peek inside.

Shit'll be all Dan Brown, yo!

Why thank you. I had the good fortune to catch the last bit of sun before it sank beneath the trees. It took a few shots before I was able to find the right angle.

I'd definetly recommend checking it out, especially if you have a taste for local historical curiosities. I forgot to mention there's an obelisk on the otherside of the courthouse in keeping with the masonic motif.

Thank you, M. Perhaps his proximity to the Temple keeps him rejuvenated:)

Being an esoterica geek of the thirty-third degree

Shouldn't that be the 23rd degree?

My former boss paid for that TJ statue. I don't know if he was a brother...but that's probably how he likes it!

I'm constantly amazed at what a small world it is here in the big city. Well it's a wonderful statue, regardless of whether its positioning was intentional or not.

I am willing to believe in strange currents which influence intent, y'know?

Sweet turn of phrase there, m'man.

Also discovered today that the T.J. statue was actually dedicated on the 23rd of a now forgotten month. God I love this city sometimes.
