Well as I understand it, back in the 70's DC tried to become socially 'relevant' to compete with the more realistic approach Marvel was taking to their unique brand of superheroics. This is how we got things like Green Arrow's sidekick, Speedy, going full-out Jim Carroll and the occasional sprouting of youthful agitprop from Robin whenever Bat's would bitch about those goddamn hippies.
Amongst these stories, one of the more memorable (and embarrassing) was an issue of Lois Lane where the star reporter, in order to better understand the African American Community, convinces Superman to use his Kryptonian tech at the Fortress of Solitude to make her black for the next 24 hours.
